While at AX2011 I bought a number of comics from people in Artist Alley. The first I bought was THE PIPER’S PROMISE part 1. The Piper’s Promise is about a boy, Theo, who seeks the help of a woman, Clara, who has some sort of intuitive abilities to locate his sister that has been missing for ten years. Also, there are a few creepers that like to spy on boys through windows.

Sammi was very nice and enthusiastic and signed and doodled in my copy and gave me some really pretty postcards! After a bit of walking around some more I found a spot to sit and read the first issue. The story was good but I went back the next day to pick up the second issue because of the art. I loved it, some really cool stuff was done. Plus, when she draws a character frustrated or angry I half fell in love. I’m not trying to imply that I didn’t like the story, cause I did, but a lot of the interesting story bits are in the second issue, which is largely a flashback of a memory of Theo’s that sets up some bizarre happenings in his small town.

UNICORNS CHANGED MY LIFE is the tale of Mullo Murony, a man who was turned into a vampire by a unicorns curse and forced to live off the blood of mythical creatures. I assure you, this is a story about a vampire being a vampire. D.R. Croston assures us this, too, on the back of the first issue.

This is a comic for mature readers. There is graphic (If at times comical) violence and some disturbingly sexy stuff. The first issue sees our central character joining a group of mythical creatures – from angels to centaurs – and explaining how he became a vampire (Though it seems they don’t yet know he is doomed to thirst for the blood and flesh of mythical creatures). The first issue concludes with the line “Didn’t your mom teach you not to lick pornstars?”

It’s a subtle but interesting twist on vampirism and I had great fun reading both issues. The art is nice and is certainly a huge source of the comedy in the series. There isn’t much like seeing the surprised look on a unicorns face as its horn is snapped off by a maniacal vampire.

For only a few bucks, you should pick up Unicorns Changed My Life if it sounds interesting. I definitely had fun and look forward to more tales of Mullo Murony devouring mythical creatures to survive.
